The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is proud to honor all the dedicated individuals who had the vision and commitment to protect the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and establish Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

In 2000, the 84 million acre Northwestern Hawaiian Island Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve was established, and in 2005 the State of Hawai’i created the largest ever state refuge.  These actions laid the groundwork for creation of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and sparked a global movement for large-scale ocean conservation and set a new standard for coral reef and wildlife protection. The 1,350 mile stretch of coral islands, seamounts, banks and shoals supports an incredible diversity of coral, fish, birds, marine mammals and other flora and fauna, many of which are unique to the Hawaiian Island chain. With the highest density of sacred sites in the archipelago, it is of great cultural and spiritual importance to Native Hawaiians. In 2010, Papahānaumokuākea was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its natural and cultural values.  And, in 2016, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs was named a co-manager of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and the monument expanded to protect more than 500,000 square miles of ocean.

A truly amazing habitat, Papahānaumokuākea is home to 14 million seabirds from 22 different species — including the Laysan albatross.
